گھریلو کبوتروں میں پیٹ کے کیڑے بن جانا ایک فطری عمل ہے۔  یہ کیڑے زیادہ تر کبوتر کی بڑی آنت میں رہتے ہیں۔ کچھ آنت کی دیواروں میں
اپنا سر گھسا کر خوراک حاصل کرتے اور کچھ آزادانہ طور پر ہضم شدہ گلوکوز کو چٹ کر جاتے ہیں۔ نتیجتاً کبوتر دانہ تو کھاتا ہے مگر دن بدن کمزور ہوتا جاتا ہے۔ بعض اوقات پرندہ موت کے منہ میں بھی چلا جاتا ہے۔ ان کی تعداد زیادہ ہوجانے پر مادہ انڈے نہیں دیتی اور نروں میں بانجھ پن ہوسکتا ہے۔

کریز کے موسم میں پیٹ میں موجود کیڑے چونکہ خوراک کو جزو بدن نہیں بننے دیتے تو باریک اور بے رونق پر نکلتے ہیں۔ بریڈنگ کے موسم میں مادہ کے اندر موجود ہونے پر مادہ سے حاصل شدہ انڈوں سے صحت مند بچے نہیں نکلتے۔ عموماً کبھی کبھار دونوں یا کبھی ایک بچہ کمزور رہ کر مرجاتا ہے۔ یہ کیڑے یا ورمز تین طرح کے ہوتے ہیں۔

پرندے میں کیڑوں کی موجودگی کی کچھ عام علامات

پرندے میں پیٹ کے کیڑوں کی موجودگی کی کچھ عام نشانیاں یہ ہیں کہ وہ کمزور اور سست ہو جاتا ہے، اس کی آنکھوں اور پنجوں کا رنگ پھیکا پڑ جاتا ہے، وہ لنگڑانے لگتا ہے، اس کا پوٹ بند ہو سکتا ہے جس سے خوراک ہضم نہیں ہوتی، وہ بیٹھ کرنے میں تکلیف محسوس کرتا ہے اور زور لگاتا ہے لیکن پھر بھی بے چین رہتا ہے، اس کا دم اوپر نیچے حرکت کر سکتا ہے، اور اس کی بیٹھ میں خون یا ثابت دانے نظر آ سکتے ہیں۔ یہ تمام علامات ظاہر ہونے پر پرندے کا علاج کروانا ضروری ہے

کبوتروں کے پیٹ کے کیڑوں کا علاج

کبوتروں کے پیٹ کے کیڑوں کے علاج کے لیے مختلف ادویات دستیاب ہیں، جن میں ایک مشہور دوا آسٹریلیا کی تیار کردہ “وارمز آؤٹ جیل (Wormsout Gel)” ہے۔ اس دوا کو استعمال کرنے کا طریقہ یہ ہے:

مقدار: 6 سے 8 سی سی وارمز آؤٹ جیل کو ایک لیٹر صاف پانی میں ڈالیں۔
مکسنگ: جیل کو پانی میں اچھی طرح مکس کرلیں تاکہ یہ یکجان ہو جائے۔
استعمال: یہ تیار شدہ محلول ہر کبوتر کو دس سی سی کے حساب سے پلائیں۔ یا پھر اسے 6 گھنٹے کے لیے کبوتروں کے سامنے بطور پینے کا پانی رکھ دیں۔

 کچھ شائقین یہ محلول دینے سے پہلے میٹھی روٹی کے تھوڑے سے بھورے ڈالتے ہیں۔ جبکہ کچھ خالی پیٹ دیتے ہیں۔ آپ دونوں طریقوں سے کرسکتے۔

ایک اور نئی دوا “موکسی ویٹ بھی دستیاب ہے جو کہ ایک لیٹر پانی میں 5 سی سی ڈال کر استعمال کی جاتی ہے اور اس کے بھی اچھے نتائج دیکھنے میں آئے ہیں۔

اس کے بعد ہماری مقامی ادویات ہیں جن میں اوکسافیکس، سسٹامیکس، نلزان پلس، لیوامیسول وغیرہ ہیں۔ پاؤڈر والی ادویات ایک لیٹر پانی میں 3 گرام نیم گرم پانی میں ڈالیں۔ یاد رکھیے مقدار سے تجاوز کرنے پر کبوتروں کے کچے پر گر جاتے ہیں۔ ایسے بچے جن کے پر ابھی نکل رہے ہوتے ہیں۔ وہ بالکل ننگے ہوجاتے ہیں۔ مادہ کی بیضہ دانی میں اسکے اپنے انڈے بھی ختم ہوجاتے ہیں۔ اس لیے مقدار سے تجاوز ہرگز نہ کریں اور کوشش کریں کہ کبوتروں یا طوطوں کے لئے مخصوص ادویات ہی استعمال کریں۔

کبوتروں کی ڈی ورمنگ کے حوالے سے چند اہم ہدایات

کبوتروں میں ڈی ورمنگ کرتے وقت تمام کبوتروں کو ایک جال میں نکال لیں اور صرف دوا ملا پانی ہی پینے کو دیں۔ کم از کم پانچ گھنٹے تک انہیں جال میں ہی رکھیں اور اس دوران کوئی خوراک نہ ڈالیں۔ اس وقت میں کافی کبوتروں کے پیٹ سے کیڑے نکل جائیں گے۔ پانچ گھنٹے بعد انہیں واپس کھڈے میں چھوڑ دیں اور کھڈے کی مکمل صفائی کریں۔ تاکہ کیڑوں کے انڈے دوبارہ کبوتروں کے ذریعے اندر نہ جائیں۔ ڈی ورمنگ لگاتار دو دن کرنی چاہیے۔ ڈی ورمنگ کے بعد کبوتروں کو روٹی کا بھورا یا 14 نمبر پولٹری فیڈ کھانے کو دیں۔

بعض اوقات کیڑے بڑی آنت میں زخم بنا دیتے ہیں، ایسے میں ڈی ورمنگ کے بعد کم از کم تین دن تک پینا ڈول، سپروفلاکساسین اور وائی ڈیلن ایل سیرپ، ہر ایک سیرپ سے 5 سی سی ایک لیٹر پانی میں ملا کر استعمال کروائیں۔ ڈی ورمنگ کے لیے بہترین وقت پرپٹائی سے پہلے یا بعد میں، بریڈنگ سے پہلے یا بعد میں، اور ایسے موسم میں جب درجہ حرارت کم از کم 30 ڈگری سینٹی گریڈ ہو۔

یہ بات ذہن میں رکھیں کہ کبوتروں میں موجود کیڑے کبھی بھی 100 فیصد ختم نہیں ہوتے۔ جو کیڑے رہ جاتے ہیں وہ دوا کے خلاف قوتِ مدافعت پیدا کر لیتے ہیں۔ اس لیے ہر تین ماہ بعد دوا تبدیل کر کے ڈی ورمنگ کرنا بہتر ہے۔

مختصر یہ کہ کبوتروں میں ڈی ورمنگ کے دوران صفائی، دو دن کا کورس، مناسب خوراک، زخموں کا علاج اور موسم کا خیال رکھنا ضروری ہے۔ ہر تین ماہ بعد دوا تبدیل کرنا بھی اہم ہے۔

Baby Pigeon Leg Problems

Splayed legs in baby pigeons can sometimes be caused by improper nesting conditions. When baby pigeons are not positioned properly in the nest, their legs may splay out to the sides. Leading to difficulty in walking or standing. This can occur if the nest material is slippery or inadequate. As a result causing the baby pigeon’s legs to spread apart instead of being positioned normally underneath its body.

To help prevent splayed legs, it’s important to provide a nesting area that is comfortable, secure, and appropriate for baby pigeons. The nest should have suitable bedding material. Treatment of Baby Pigeon Leg Paralysis

1. Nutritional Intervention: Ensuring a well-balanced diet for baby pigeons is crucial in avoiding leg paralysis. Providing a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin D3, calcium, and B-complex vitamins. As they can significantly reduce the risk of leg deformities.
2. Splints or Tape Support: For mild cases, using splints or tape to temporarily realign the legs can aid in correcting leg positioning. It is important to seek guidance from a veterinarian or experienced pigeon breeder to apply this technique correctly.
3. Physical Therapy: Encouraging gentle exercises and range-of-motion movements can help improve muscle strength and coordination. Gradually increase exercise levels to allow the pigeon to regain mobility.
4. Heat Therapy: Applying gentle heat therapy to the affected leg muscles can alleviate pain and inflammation. However, be cautious not to use excessive heat that may cause burns.
5. Veterinary Assistance: In severe cases, it is best to consult a veterinarian experienced in avian medicine. A daily tablet of Mathycobal (100mg only) medicine for duration of five days to an adult or baby pigeon helps the sudden paralysis in legs.

Effects of Canker in Pigeons

The form that the disease takes when it attacks young in the nest is first to  stop the growth of the youngsters particularly their feather growth. The lump in  the throat becomes larger and larger, until it is impossible for the old birds to give any food to the youngsters.

When the disease attacks young pigeons of 14 days old or under, there is no hope of cure. It shows up yellowish white pustule in the throat of young bird which eventually becomes larger resulting to closes off the wind pipe opening and thereby produce suffocation. When it  attacks pigeons of from 3 1/2 to 4 weeks old and is taken in time, these young ones can be cured, and in after life seem to suffer no serious effects.

Canker In Pigeons

The general cause of canker is foul water, fungoid food, or vitiated. The birds most subject to canker are those fed on maize particularly the large, cheap classes of this grain. I know of nothing worse than maize to feed canker into pigeons. Therefore fanciers should avoid the use of this grain. The best diet in the canker affected loft is good barley, wheat and  peas, in equal parts.

How to Treat Canker in Pigeons?

The following prescription I have found to be invaluable for this purpose: 2 oz.  sulphate of soda, 1 oz. alum, 2 oz. ordinary white table salt, dissolved in a quart of boiling water. Give Half a pin to two quarts of drinking water once or twice a week. Fed in the manner described, with regular exercise, will speedily affect a cure. 

In mild cases, where the growth is in the mouth or throat. It should be removed with a small stick or piece of wood, and the part painted with equal parts of perchloride of iron and glycerin,  painting well down the throat and over the affected part.

Trichomoniasis Sores

Best treatment for canker outside of the body, burn with caustic pencil. Great care is necessary if the growth is near to and eye. Trichoplus by Oropharma company is a magical solution of Canker for Pigeons. Highly recommended. Moreover a prescribed dosage of Enheptin or Emtryl to the affected birds gives great results. Give it in feed, water or individually in measured capsules.

Within just a few days of infection, both visibly and latently affected birds shed the virus in secretions from the conjunctiva, nose and throat, as well as in the faeces. The incubation period ranges from 3 to 21 days. Up to 30% of affected pigeons may recover spontaneously after around 4 weeks of illness.

Pigeons Paramyxovirus Virus -Clinical Signs of Infected Pigeon

PPMV1 is a contagious viral disease which typically affects high numbers of pigeons within a loft.

Clinical signs can be seen as early as 5 days after picking up the virus, or as long as 6 weeks after acquiring infection. The birds drink more than normal and produce watery green faeces consisting of pool of clear urine surrounding a core of green material.

Spread of Paramyxovirus in Pigeons

PPMV1 spreads easily between pigeons. During this time infected birds excrete the virus through their faeces, as well as other bodily discharges. Other birds become infected through direct contact with an infected bird, or contamination of the environment, feed, water, equipment and human clothing. The virus may remain infectious in the environment for several weeks. The disease can be introduced to a loft of kept pigeons through contact with wild pigeons.

How To Prevent Pigeons from Newcastle Disease ?

Pigeon owners are responsible for preventing PPMV1 in their flocks. Prevention can be achieved through vaccination and sound biosecurity practices.

• quarantine new birds before introducing them to the existing flock
• feed and clean quarantined birds after the other birds
• prevent contamination of food and water by droppings
• buy birds from a breeder with a known bird health status
• buy healthy-looking birds and avoid buying them from markets
• disinfect equipment used to house, transport or feed or water birds from outside your flock or birds that have travelled to shows
• restrict contact between pet birds and wild birds

Feeding and Watering the Infected Birds

Place seed in a deep dish so that if they stab at random they can pick seed up. Because Pigeon PMV can cause fits pigeons are at risk of drowning but they need free access to water. Provide water (with added electrolytes if possible) in a deep narrow container to minimize the risk of accidental drowning.

Hand feeding may be necessary. If feeding by gavage tube is not an option the pigeon’s mouth has to be opened and the food pushed to the back of throat. The perfect diet is to give black chickpeas (soaked in water for 6 hours), and let the pigeon drink the same water.

Weigh the pigeon daily and carry out a poop count to ensure that he is getting enough food. As a guideline, a healthy pigeon will pass between 20 and 30 raisin sized poops a day.

Additional Treatment for Infected Birds

The disease runs its course in about 6 weeks, by that time the pigeon has stopped shedding the virus and won’t infect other pigeons but nervous symptoms and gastro-intestinal may persist longer. Always give vitamins to boost the immune system. A good Sun-light 4-5 hours each day is very important for your infected birds. Using of probiotics helps to crowd out any bad gut bacteria. Electrolytes can be given to replace the electrolytes lost through polyuria.

I have found that providing a calcium supplement on arrival (Gem Calcium Syrup with Vitamin D3) has helped. The dose I gave was two drops a day for 3 days. Do not use antibiotics without consulting a vet. They can intensify the lesions and aggravate the course of the disease.

Transmission of Salmonella

Enteritis with pulpy, mucoid, greenish droppings; once organs (liver, kidneys, spleen) have become infected, there is growth retardation, emaciation and (in isolated cases) death. Embryos infected with salmonellae frequently die in ovo or during the first few days of life.

Disease of Salmonella

Inflammation causes a thickening of the joints, especially the elbow joint, wing or leg lameness, disorders of balance and torsion of the neck. Recognition of the disease: Bacteriological examination of faecal and/or organ samples.

Strategy To Prevent Loft From Salmonella

1. Keep pigeons away from wild birds, which can carry salmonella.
2. Clean and disinfect feed and water containers regularly.
3. Enclosed coops and loft areas to reduce contact with wild birds.
4. Improve ventilation in the loft area to reduce dampness and condensation, which can breed salmonella.
5. Monitor birds closely for signs of illness such as diarrhea, depression, ruffled feathers, and weight loss.
6. Consider vaccinating against salmonella if the birds will be going to shows, or live in areas of high contamination.

Treating Salmonella Poisoning

During a known outbreak of salmonellosis, remove bird feeders and baths until warmer spring weather to reduce the likelihood of transmission. Clean your bird feeders and bath two times a month with hot soapy water followed by a 3 minute soak in a 10% solution of domestic bleach (1 part sodium hypochlorite in 9 parts water) for disinfection. Clean the feeders with cold water and dry well before use.

Keep separate brushes and equipment to clean bird feeders and baths only. Keep them outside and away from food preparation areas. Wear rubber gloves when cleaning feeders and thoroughly wash hands and forearms afterwards with soap and water, especially before eating and drinking. Avoid handling sick or dead birds directly.

How Salmonella Is Treated ?

1. Isolate any affected birds.
2. Administer medication orally or by injection.
3. Provide supportive care, such as electrolyte solutions.
4. Increase the bird’s vitamin and calcium intake.
5. Provide a high-quality, nutrient-rich diet.
6. Disinfect the loft and surrounding areas.
7. Clean and disinfect drinking and feeding utensils.

10. Consider vaccinating against salmonella if the birds will be going to shows, or live in areas of high contamination.

Always start the treatment with chloramphenicol-N if the symptoms appear. In some cases it is necessary to change the treatment (e.g. to doxycyclin-t or ampicillin-t). Do not give pigeons any feeds containing calcium or grit during treatment with doxycyclin-t. Since calcium binds doxycycline and thus reduces its efficacy.

In addition, If your bird is recovering from treatment of salmonella, keep his environment clean, especially food and water containers. Your bird may feel the cold with being unwell, so a little added heat may help.

Use of Multivitamin EB12 for three days during the treatment of Salmonella in pigeons is very helpful. It will help to boost the immune system of your pigeons. Use of apple cider vinegar in water is very useful.

The Female begin to produce eggs and further contaminate the environment in 2- 3 weeks. Lightly infested birds may show symptoms of anorexia or decreased appetite with weightless. Heavy infestations may result in illness or death due to emaciation, dehydration and anemia.

Tape Worms

Rallietina and Aporina (Taenia) delafondi are the most common tapeworms in pigeons. Feather louse has been suspected. Laziness, watery or mucoid droppings, weakness and leg paralysis have been reported.

• Levamisol (13.65% solution) dosed at 100mg/gal drinking water is very effective for roundworms, but not effective for stomach or tapeworms.

• Fenbenzazole at 10mg/kg once daily for 3 days shown 99% effective in removing roundworms and hairworms. (not recommended to use in molting season)

Deworming in Pigeons Expert Opinion & Advice

Deworming in Pigeons – I frequently encounter cases of pigeons having tape-worms. The bird becomes thin and tired-looking, with dull and sunken eyes. It also shows an abnormal appetite and lacks its usual energy for flying. By closely observing the bird, you can often notice the tape-worm protruding from its rear. I have removed tape-worms measuring three to four feet in length from pigeons. Additionally, there are other small worms and parasites that can affect them.

The most effective treatment I have found for worm removal is to give the bird a 5-minim capsule of male-fern oil on an empty crop. About two hours later, I administer a dose of castor oil, occasionally purging with a small amount of sulphate of magnesia. This treatment has shown great results, as some affected birds have gone on to perform well, and the worms have not reappeared.

Tips to Check Pigeon Health

Dropping of the pigeons should be well formed, without smell, brown/green in color and firm. Birds with slimy, wet dropping or dropping with worm like particles in them should be removed from the loft immediately.

There should be no yellow, slimy mucous or deposits or grey spots any where in the lining or on the jaw of pigeons.

Beaks of pigeons should have white, powdery skin and the same around their eyes.

Feet should be clean and responsive. Only an ill pigeon would allow itself to get dirty feet. Feathers around their anus should be dry and clean with no discoloration or dirt.

Eyes should be bright, alert and clear all the time. There should be no sign of flies, mites or other parasites in the loft.

Entering New Birds In Loft !

Always quarantine new birds: Many birds carry bad bacteria yet look healthy. All new pigeons should be wormed, treated for canker and coccidia, and placed on ten days of antibiotics (Baytril or Cipro are good) to get rid of salmonella BEFORE they are put in with the other birds.  Do NOT cause your birds any undue stress by over handling, irregular loud noises or constant interference. Stress will definitely affect their performance.
